Grading, assessment, and knowing[1]

Introduction[edit]

Do you understand our standards? The goal of assessment is to reliably determine if a student meets assessment criteria. Or in other words, do you understand this?

Formative assessment[edit]

Formative assessment, including diagnostic testing, is a range of formal and informal assessment procedures conducted by teachers during the learning process in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve student attainment [2]

  • We will have formative assessments almost every week. Most formative assessments will be recorded in our gradebook. I'll remind you to use formative assessments to gauge your own self-assessment. You should ask yourself "Do I understand this stuff" and then look at formative assessments to answer the question.

Summative assessment[edit]

Summative assessment (or summative evaluation) refers to the assessment of participants where the focus is on the outcome of a program.[3]

  • Instruction in this course is based around logical topics and projects. Summative assessments are given at the end of each topic.
