Any device can be used in a distributed network. A mobile phone, a desktop computer, a laptop computer or maybe even a tablet device! The key point to remember is the devices are running a common set of software which allows a portion of the devices computing resources to be shared with other devices.
Distributed networks can use a wide range of hardware, including servers, switches, routers, and other networking equipment.

Servers are powerful computers that are designed to provide services to other computers or devices on the network. They can be used for a variety of purposes, such as hosting websites, storing and processing data, or running applications. Servers can be classified according to their size, capabilities, and intended use, such as web servers, application servers, database servers, and file servers.

Switches are networking devices that are used to connect computers and other devices on a network. They work by forwarding data packets between devices based on their destination addresses. Switches can be used to create multiple network segments and to improve the performance and security of the network.

Web Science[1]

Distributed networking is a distributed computing network system, said to be distributed when the computer programming and the data to be worked on are spread out across more than one computer.[2]

“A Distributed System is a collection of independent computers that appear to its users as a single coherent system”[3]

Hardware used in a distributed networks[edit]

Routers are networking devices that are used to connect different networks and to route data packets between them. Routers use routing tables and protocols to determine the best path for data packets to take between networks, and they can be used to connect networks of different types, such as LANs, WANs, and the internet.

Other hardware that may be used in distributed networks includes hubs, bridges, firewalls, and load balancers.

In summary, distributed networks can use a wide range of hardware, including servers, switches, routers, and other networking equipment, to connect and communicate with each other and to deliver services to users.

An important distinction[edit]

Please remember, for the rest of your life, the image below, and the distinction between centralized, decentralized, and distributed networks. Although we are learning about web science in this article, this idea is used in many different areas of computer science. Do you understand this?[edit]

From the IB: Students should be aware of developments in mobile technology that have facilitated the growth of distributed networks.

Standards[edit]

These standards are used from the IB Computer Science Subject Guide[4]

  • Describe the range of hardware used by distributed networks.
